The Four Horsemen of Inaction
In this first episode of the Projet Cassandre, I host Claude Garcia, an ecologist and professor of international forest governance at Bern University of Applied Sciences. For the past 30 years, Claude has been exploring tropical regions to observe how people make decisions about land use, and has been developing methods to transform the way we view ecological issues through the use of games. In 2021, he and his team co-published the study “Choices We Make in Times of Crisis” in the journal Sustainability, proposing a framework for understanding behaviours deemed irrational in the climate debate: the four-door system. This is a powerful and accessible theoretical framework for understanding communication barriers and identifying levers for action.
Why information alone is not enough
Projet Cassandre - Episode 2 | The Ignorant : How to Open the First Door The ignorants are not irrational, they simply haven't received the information yet. But how do you get it to them? Claude Garcia unpacks the mechanisms of ignorance and the levers for opening the first door.
From denial to reasonable doubt
Projet Cassandre - Episode 3 | The Denier: How to Open the Second Door When facing a denier, piling up evidence is useless. Opinions are like nails: the more you hammer them in, the deeper they go. So how do you change a belief? The answer comes down to one word: surprise.
